IAPMO’s new Vice President Gary Hile is a third generation practitioner of the trades; his grandfather, father and brother were all members of the plumbing profession. The Alaska native recalls riding along on jobs to observe the plumbing craft from a young age. “Both my grandfather and my dad taught me what having pride in your work is all about,” he says.
Hile entered the profession 27 years ago, completing his apprenticeship and putting in his years as a journeyman. From 1989 to 1992, he worked as a plumbing foreman. He then began his career as a plumbing and mechanical inspector with the City of Anchorage in 1992 and was appointed to his present position as Chief Plumbing/Mechanical Inspector in 2000.* Hile is a Certified Plumbing Inspector (IAPMO), a Certified Mechanical Inspector (IAPMO and ICBO), a Certified Medical Gas Inspector (PIPE), a Certified Backflow Assembly Tester for the Municipality of Anchorage, and a Certified Backflow Assembly Instructor through the University of Florida.
At IAPMO, Hile serves on the Audit Committee, Bylaws Committee, R&T Board of Directors, Executive Committee, Uniform Mechanical CodeWorkshop Committee, and UMC Answers and Analysis Committee. In addition, he’s also chaired IAPMO’s Anchorage Chapter and served on the UPC Technical Committee. “I am honored and privileged to have the opportunity to continue serving the IAPMO membership as vice president,” he says.
“I truly appreciate all the support I have received and the continued vote of confidence. IAPMO continues to grow as an organization and I will do what I can to contribute to that sustaining growth. I see nothing but positive achievements in the future for IAPMO as the organization expands into new territory and extends its hand to the rest of the world to help everyone obtain the same quality plumbing systems that we have benefited from for many years.”
Hile and his wife, Lynda, have been happily married for 21 years. They have two boys, Logan and Carson. Hile enjoys spending time with his family, snowmobiling, golfing, working with computers, NASCAR racing and power boating.
