Thomas Bigley, Director at Large, Labor

Tom Bigley

Thomas G. Bigley is the director of Plumbing Services for The United Association of Journeyman and Apprentices of the Plumbing and Pipefitting Industry of the United States, Canada and Australia.

Bigley started his career during high school as a member of the Plumbers Laborers Union digging ditches for plumbers during the summers. He began his plumbing career in 1981 and after his four-year apprenticeship graduated from Allegheny County Community College with an associate’s degree in project management and estimation.

As a 33-year member of Pittsburgh Plumbers Local 27 he has been employed as a journeyman plumber, welder, foreman, and superintendent, working on schools, hospitals, residential and commercial buildings, and industrial plants in several states.

Bigley is a second-generation plumber, following in the footsteps of his father. “My father paved the way for my brothers, son and nephews,” he says. “Family affairs quickly turn into job box talk when we get together.”

Bigley was elected to Local 27’s examining board, recording secretary, business agent and business manager/financial secretary. His experience includes political and leadership positions outside his local union. He served as vice president of the Allegheny County Labor Council, vice president of the Pittsburgh Building Trades Council and as vice president of the Pennsylvania Pipe Trades Association. Bigley served as secretary of the Allegheny County Plumbing Advisory Committee.

Bigley has served as a trustee to the International Training Fund for the United Association. He is chairman of the Plumbing Service Committee, Plumbing Industry Council and serves on the Plumbing Industry Leadership Coalition.

“I look forward to working with President Pfeiffer and the Board of Directors in ensuring that IAPMO protects the health of the nation and the growing needs of the world’s plumbing infrastructure,” he says.

Bigley and his wife, Kathy, have two children; Joseph, who is a 13-year plumber/welder that travels the country extensively at his trade, and Jamie, who is an occupational therapist in Scottsdale, Ariz. The Bigleys recently enjoyed the birth of their first grandchild, Augustus. In his spare time, Bigley likes to golf, hunt, fish and enjoy time at his cabin.
