Reciprocity Certification

IAPMO grants certification to individuals certified by other agencies. The rationale for IAPMO’s recognition of another organization’s certifications, in lieu of its own, is based on the fact that the job definitions (functions, duties, tasks, knowledge, skills and abilities for each certification title) of the corresponding examinations are consistent with IAPMO’s.

An important reason to consider reciprocity is the time and expense saved to participate in IAPMO’s program.

Reciprocal certification is subject to the following conditions:

  • The other organization’s certification program meets a recognized national quality standard for test development and administration.
  • The certifications or applicable score reports are current (less than 3 years) with the other organization.
  • The examinations used for certifications are consistent with IAPMO’s.
  • The certification candidate passes a multiple choice exam based on the applicable Uniform Code, which is mailed directly to the candidate upon receipt of the application for roll-in.

Reciprocity is available for these IAPMO certifications:

  • Uniform Plumbing Inspector
  • Uniform Mechanical Inspector
  • Uniform Plumbing Plans Examiner
  • Uniform Mechanical Plans Examiner
