Montana Plumbing License Testing

IAPMO is excited to provide Journeyman and Master Plumbing License Exams for the State of Montana.

Testing Options

  1. Online Proctored Exams via IAPMO's FLEX testing platform (click for more information).
  2. In-Person Exams that will be given at physical locations in several cities across the state.

Prior to registering for the exam, it is required to have Montana Plumbing Board Approval.  You will not be allowed to test if you have not received approval.  If you have recently been approved, please wait to register until the Friday after receiving your approval.

What to Bring to Your Exam

For exam security and integrity purposes you are only allowed to bring the following references into the exam environment:

  • Uniform Plumbing Code - Candidates can bring in an original copy of the Uniform Plumbing Code for use on the exam. However, it must meet all of the following criteria:
    • It must be an original copy in its original binding, meaning it cannot be a photocopied version of the code.

    • No loose papers or notes are allowed to be inserted or written into the code book. Any of these items found before the exam begins will be required to be removed from the testing environment. Any of these items found during the exam will result in the exam being immediately terminated and the violating candidate will be reported to the Plumbing Board.
  • Montana Amendments - Candidates are allowed to bring and use a copy of the Montana amendments to the Uniform Plumbing Code. A copy of these amendments can be downloaded. The amendments used on the exam must meet the following criteria:
    • The version of the amendments (2018 or 2021) must match the code year the exam you are scheduled to take is based on. If there is a mismatch between the amendments and the exam year, candidates will not be allowed to take the exam.
    • No loose papers or notes are allowed to be inserted or written into the amendments. Any of these items found before the exam begins will be required to be removed from the testing environment. Any of these items found during the exam will result in the exam being immediately terminated and the violating candidate will be reported to the Plumbing Board.
